After her life falls apart, actress Laura Franco finds her voice again when she encounters a terrifying yet strangely charming monster living in her closet. A romantic comedy-horror film about falling in love with your inner rage. Referenced in Amanda the Jedi Show: The Best and Weirdest Movies You (Mostly) Haven’t Seen Yet | Love Lies Bleeding (2024). I didn’t want to see this movie, at least in theaters. I was going to wait until it came out on streaming when surprisingly I went to AMC Screen Unseen for the first time and it was the movie they decided to play. It wasn’t a bad first encounter with this unique event, and I can’t say it was a bad novel.

However, a lot holds it back, but not enough to take away from its charm

To start the positives, Melissa Barrera and Tommy Dewey had great chemistry (most of the time) and gave delightful performances as Laura and the Monster. Without them, this film would have succumbed to the weight of constant flaws, but Barrera and Dewey carry it to the finish line. The movie wasn’t all that funny despite being a movie novel – come on – but there were plenty of chuckle-worthy moments, and one that made me laugh. I also thought they nailed the beast makeup and costumes and sets, especially when it came to the play that Laura’s ex-boyfriend Jacob put on. It was impressive and Brielle Hubert, Sarah Dawn Hamlin, Matthew Simonelli and the makeup department deserve credit. The last positive I can offer is that it has charm visible from a mile away.

First, despite Barrera’s earnest performance, Laura isn’t entirely convincing

It is the main reason why I can appreciate the positives more than the negatives. Regardless of his problems, his heart is in the right place. Even though I think it’s a decent watch, the negatives are noticeable and worth mentioning, but I’ll keep it as simple and sweet as possible, although I might sound like I’m criticizing the film more than it deserves – just so you know. She screams and complains many times throughout the film – of course, she takes her breakup with Jacob and a cancer diagnosis, but she gets annoying in the first ten minutes. This sucks because Laura is the main character, the person we have to root for. She is also incredibly, somewhat unrealistically, naive to the fact that Jacob is Mr.

Speaking of Monster, he and Laura’s relationship is unbalanced

Wrong, enough for Monster to call out its obvious flaws at several intervals. By that, I mean, for the most part, they felt more like bickering step-siblings than potential romantics. There are moments where they felt in love, sometimes to the point of being ridiculous, and they really stood out in a good way. However, I wasn’t impressed with how they executed their relationship. Speaking of unbalanced, the film as a whole is. It wants to be a cliched romantic comedy, sometimes a meaningful drama, sometimes a serious romantic drama, and sometimes a horror movie.

Again, it’s not perfect

In terms of the horror movie angle, aside from the makeup, the Monster is acting normal, aside from growling and throwing objects. Why couldn’t they do what “Lisa Frankenstein” did; did and never take the story seriously? In conclusion, "Your Monster" it’s not a movie you have to drop everything you’re doing and see in theaters. It’s easy to wait until streaming, but it might be worth watching if you like romantic comedies. I can classify myself as a fan of the genre, and while I don’t think it’s the perfect trip to the movies, it’s deeply flawed but unexpectedly charming. Technically, Monster’s performances, sets, costumes and make-up make the technical score an easy 7/10.
