Mahin: Are you afraid of death?
Tale
The hitherto lonely 70-year-old Mahin decides to rekindle his love life. A chance meeting turns into an unforgettable evening. Faramarz: No, I’m afraid of dying alone.
Shabe Golestan Tanha Singer: Dariush Rafiee Composer: Majid Vafadar Lyrics: Mahmood Sanaee
"Mahin" (Lily Farhadpour) is a lonely, widowed, retired nurse who has been living alone for years when she overhears a conversation in a state pensioner’s cafe, noting that the taxi driver "Faramarz" (Esmaeel Mehrabi) is also single. He decides to track her down pretty quickly and the next thing she knows she’s in his taxi. It’s not like a cougar or a woman – they’re just two older people who get caught up in the idea of something “extra” at the end of their rainy day.
The largest bottle of wine you’ve ever seen is properly crafted, and you can guess what’s on the cards
except? You can also guess that things aren’t going to go as planned – and we’re given a few subtle hints along the way to manage expectations as this genuinely funny and mischievous story unfolds. Farhadpour is genuinely endearing as he woos his new love, and there’s a lovely, soft chemistry between them, as most of the plot takes place in her house as they make sure not to run afoul of the terrifying morality police who might arrive and punish them – even as parents – for being home alone together!
In fact, what also helps this work is the gentle way it makes some pretty strong points
The assumptions made about age, age – are true, but it also takes a broader view of a society that still treats women as less free citizens thanks to their testicular counterparts. Most of all, I found it really funny and it conveys confidence, shyness, optimism, and hope with a dark sense of humor – especially at the end. I’m not entirely sure if he would have baked the cake in the allotted time, but it looked delicious!
