I read the original novel many times as a teenager, decades ago
Featured in the Korman Productions’ Deep Dive TV podcast: Earth Abides on MGM+ Deep Dive Episode 1 “Alone” with Dave and Stacie (2024). It’s a beautiful story with lots of powerful imagery, highly recommended, if a little dated: published in 1949, seventy-five years ago. While I’ve often wondered over the years if it would ever be made into a movie, I wasn’t expecting this limited series adaptation, so I was very surprised when it came along.

Also very concerned, as it remains one of my all-time favorite reads. “Men come and go, but the earth remains” is a quote I often use for myself. With some trepidation, I watched the first episode.

That was really cool!” Watching Ish stare at the smoke coming from Em’s house brought the book’s imagery to life. Of course, it’s been modernized in many ways out of necessity, but important plot points remain largely the same. Other changes, like limiting Ish’s trip to just Las Vegas rather than Atlantic City, make sense and aren’t important to the characters’ interactions.
