The first Indian film to win the prestigious Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival
In Mumbai, nurse Prabha’s routine is disrupted when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate, Anu, tries in vain to find a place in the city to be intimate with her boyfriend.. Director Payal Kapadia and the cast of All We Imagine As Light come together to share the most heartfelt reactions from Cannes and much more! . After winning the prestigious Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival – a feat never before achieved by an Indian film – this film was supposed to be a must-see.
However, I have mixed emotions about it
It’s a story about three women in Mumbai, all working in a hospital. Prabha and Anu are nurses – Prabha is just trying to live her life while waiting for her estranged husband to return, while Anu is looking for a place to be intimate with her lover. Right from the opening scene, you are immersed in the hustle and bustle of Mumbai in its truest form. Payal Kapadia, the one at the helm of the film, uses the local train as a recurring motif to portray the city authentically. The usual glitz and glamor of Mumbai is deliberately ignored, which works in the film’s favour.
Kani Kusruthi takes center stage, shining with extraordinary grace and confidence
Its tone leans towards a found footage style, which adds to the rawness. The climax is ambiguous, leaving you searching for articles to uncover its true meaning. The combination of Hindi and Malayalam enhances the authenticity of the narrative. Divya Prabha is equally brilliant in her role, giving serious competition to her co-stars. Chhaya Kadam, though reminiscent of her character in Laapata Ladies, delivers a serious performance in this film too.
Together, these three women showcase their acting prowess
The film is slow-paced and feels burdensome at times. While it effectively portrays the liberation and realities of women, it doesn’t bring anything particularly new to the table. The controversy over nudity feels baseless when you consider the lovemaking scene that was essential to the script. However, the moment where Divya flashes her breasts felt unnecessary. The background score works in parts, but could have been improved significantly.

This film leans heavily towards the art-house category, which diminishes its entertainment value. For me, it came across as strictly average – the so-called "poetry in motion" that doesn’t quite resonate.
