A man quits his job to take care of his terminally ill grandmother, motivated by her wealth. He plans to win her favor before she dies. In fact, this is the film debut of 78-year-old housewife Usa Semkum, who plays the role of grandmother Meng Ju. M: Do you ever feel lonely? Ama: I wouldn’t call it loneliness. It’s part of life. Ama: I have a problem the day after Chinese New Year. When all the leftovers from the night before are in the fridge and I know I have to eat them all alone. No matter how hard you try to hold back the tears, eventually the wall will come crashing down while in the background a pickup truck performs a beautiful farewell ceremony. Watching this scene raises a question. Are the tears shed because the film is well made, or because viewers (including me) immediately associate the events on screen with personal memories? The answer is “both.” It’s easy to relate to, as the grandmother has a deep understanding of family dynamics, “especially in Asian families,” and how to make millions before you die. How inheritances can erase affections, how gatherings at Grandma’s are always a warm moment to look forward to, how Grandma dresses up in her best clothes and eagerly awaits the arrival of her children and grandchildren, and how pervasive loneliness is when you’re together, especially for adults who live alone. The memories of all these moments are truly a precious legacy.
