In the winter of 1862, during the Civil War, the U.S. Army sends a company of volunteers to patrol the uncharted western territories. Minervini had a set built in Montana and left the cast there for two months. The dialogue and thoughts expressed are those that the actors imagined while living in the wilderness and imagining themselves as soldiers in the Civil War. “The Damned” is a completely boring film. It feels like someone made a home video with a phone or an old camcorder. While the scenery is beautiful, the soldiers just walk around and do nothing. The changing seasons and snowfall add little to the experience. All in all, it’s a complete waste of time. You’d be better off watching traffic jams from your window in a big city—much more fun than this movie. I thought the directors and filmmakers were famous, but I’d never heard of them. It seems like the most famous directors make films for cross-cultural audiences, not for average people like me.
